Before we started working together we didn’t really know much about legionella control, let’s face it who does? It turns out that it’s a vital function of many sectors of businesses, particularly in the industrial, manufacturing and facilities areas.
Legionnaires disease is a killer. In 2014 there were 331 cases of the disease, with 25 fatalities and 85% of those were aged over 50 years.
Outbreaks of the illness occur from exposure to Legionella bacteria growing in purpose-built water systems such as cooling towers, hot and cold water systems (tanks and cylinders) and spa pools. If not maintained in accordance with ACoP(L8) these systems become contaminated with bacteria and potentially Legionella.
Once the Legionella bacteria reaches sufficient numbers it is normally contracted by inhaling small water droplets suspended in the air and containing the bacteria.
